'Xactly the same, only completely different...

..I used to believe 100% that disability was just like any other so-called bodily difference from what is percieved or treated as standard - ie white heterosexual men. I waver these days, because I think there are some real and specific differences relating to some impairments. Pain, for example. However if you stick vigorously to the social model of disability and thus seperate disability (the discrimination) from impairment (the diagnosis) then the idea fits much better.

There's an interesting article about it here; and while I think it doesn't always work on a personal level on a societal level its a good way forward. Or at least better than things are now.
