Laugh?..
... I nearly cried. I tend to go to the cinema to relax, and often to learn something. I love Mike Leigh films and so was keen to see Vera Drake.
I loved the film - I thought it was beautifully done and heartily recommend it for days when you are not in a bad emotional place. It presents the point of view of Vera, who carries out abortions on young girls in difficulty in 1950.
Regardless of your view on abortion, I can't imagine not having sympathy for all the characters involved. I really really loved this film - and feel sure I should be able to make some pithy or interesting point about it. I guess the main point is the obvious one - while I am uncomfortable with certain aspects of current abortion legislation in this country - making it illegal solves nothing.
